Actor Isabella Coelho on the cerebral, dreamlike world of Lecherous Honey
Megan Breen and Cock and Bull re-imagine Henrik Ibsen's classic play Ghosts in this contemporary adaptation , what remains the same and how is the play deconstructed?
When comparing Lecherous Honey to Ibsen's original text it becomes clear that the glue of the two plays are the same: the characters, their relationships, and the questions they are considering. I feel like our play is exploded outward from it's source material: a world that is cerebral, dreamlike, and perhaps at times nightmarish.
The play is performed promenade-style/site specific. Where the audience follows the action throughout Berger Park North Mansion. What challenges does this present as an actor?
Unlike when performing in a traditional theater, we never know how the audience is going to move or where they will choose to view each scene. This forces all of us to keep a constant awareness of our relationship to everyone we are sharing the space with. Although this is a challenge unique to our staging, I think it keeps performances feeling spontaneous and exciting, because it is impossible to go into auto pilot.
What has been your favorite unique theatrical experience and why?
Two come to mind at the moment: Sleep No More and the off-broadway production of Natasha Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812. Both of these experiences cast me into the world of their narrative in completely different ways: In Sleep No More I was given a mask and the freedom to explore the Mckittrick Hotel on my volition and in Natasha Pierre... I was welcomed into a warm cabaret that was built in a tent in the middle of Midtown, sit at a table, drink with friends, and be surrounded by the story. I left both of these productions feeling that I have had a completely personal connection and a uniquely visceral reaction to the work I had experienced.
What makes Cock and Bulls work unique or exciting as a part of the Chicago theatre landscape?
Working with Cock and Bull is exciting as a theatre artist, because this company revels in theatricality and the magic that can produced only in a live setting. In order to do this Cock and Bull brings so many talented artists together to collaborate and create together. Cock and Bull does not attempt to reproduce life identically, but rather how it looks through a kaleidoscope and that is fun, challenging, and in the end so beautiful to look at.
